Why this setup exists

Microbiology result entry depends on consistent organism and antibiotic setup. If organisms are typed freely every time, reports become inconsistent and sensitivity data becomes difficult to review. The organisms and antibiotics setup gives the lab a controlled list.

Use this area with the culture test setup. Culture tests decide where organisms and panels appear; organisms and antibiotics define the options themselves.

Organisms

An organism record includes English name, Arabic name, Gram stain, typical sample type, description or notes, active status, and attached antibiotic panels. The table shows name, Arabic name, Gram stain, active status, and creation date.

Use Gram stain to classify the organism when it helps microbiology reporting. Use typical sample type as a guide, not as a replacement for the culture test's own sample setup.

Antibiotics

Antibiotic records include English name, Arabic name, abbreviation, antibiotic class, and active status. The abbreviation appears in compact sensitivity displays, so it should match the lab's reporting convention.

Do not create duplicate antibiotics with slightly different spellings. Choose one naming standard and keep it consistent.

Antibiotic panels

Panels group antibiotics together. A panel has a name, description, active status, selected antibiotics, and display order. Panels are attached to organisms or culture tests to make sensitivity entry faster.

Use panels for practical lab workflows, such as urinary isolates, Gram negative panel, Gram positive panel, or custom partner requirements.

Linking panels to organisms

An organism can have multiple panels, and one can be marked as default. Display order controls how panels appear. Use a default panel when staff should normally start with a specific sensitivity group for that organism.

Review these links with the microbiology lead. A default panel should reflect current lab policy, not old habits.

Maintenance

Deactivate organisms, antibiotics, or panels when they should no longer be selected. Avoid deleting records that may exist in old culture results. For new reporting standards, create or update the relevant panel and train staff before changing active culture tests.
